Of course most people come for the beach, but there is so much more to do on the island, we felt that showing you photos would be better than just telling you. Whether you want to relax by the pool, crab or fish, kayak, play tennis or pickle ball or simply enjoy the amazing sunsets from one of our covered porches, there is plenty to keep you active. And if you want to venture off the Island, we include an annual car pass for Hunting Island (2 minutes away) and if requested, a gate pass to Fripp Island (8 minutes away). Click on the photos in the gallery at the bottom of the page for captions and a virtual tour of Harbor Island Amenities.
The pool complex is a great place to take a break from the sand. In addition to the large main pool, the complex features a kiddie pool, a playground and Mens and Womens shower and changing rooms. Enjoy the view of the marsh and Harbor River while relaxing in one of the abundant lounge chairs or take a break for ice cream or a sandwhich from the adjoining Turtle's Nest.
The Pool and Racquet Club feature two tennis courts and two pickle ball courts as well as a basketball court and golf chipping area. Access to all Harbor Island amenities are included in our rental.
The Harbor Island Nature Trail is approximately 1.5 miles in length and it takes you through many of the ecosystems on the island. The trail leads you from the beach to the marsh to the fresh water rookeries on the island. Click here for more information. One tip, if you sit on either of the marsh-facing porches right after daylight or before sunset, you’ll see droves of Egrets flying from/to the fresh water ponds low over the marsh.
Harbor Island boasts one of the largest populations of Egrets and Herons found on the Sea Islands. Make sure you take at least one evening to watch the sun set at the fresh water pond overlook just past the entrance to the Pool and Racquet club. At all times of year you will see hundreds of Snowy Egrets resting on the trees surrounding the pond. This is an active rookery from April thorugh September. Make sure you look at the edge of the pond, straight down from the viewing platform as you can often find a resident gator relaxing in the shade.
Harbor Island is a great place to learn to saltwater fish. Whether you want to try fishing or crabbing at one of the two docks or try your luck in the surf, you have lots of opportunity. Click here to learn more about spots to try and how its done.
We highly recommend Island Spirit Rentals if you want to rent a kayak or kayaks for a day or a week. Both Johnson Creek and Harbor River are great places to explore the marsh or fish from the water. Visit them at their website here.
The deck off the kitchen is the perfecdt place to enjoy an oyster roast. You can use the gas grill to heat or cook the live oysters and shuck them on the bar rail. You'll find oyster knives in the cabinet. And a box of clean, select oysters (best choice if this is your first time) can be ordered from Gay Fish Co.. Watch this video to learn the safest way to shuck an oyster. You can deposit your empty shells in the creek behind the house. Please don't put them in the trash bins.
As you sit on any of the marsh-facing porches, enjoy a beverage and watch the sun melt into the Harbor River. The color changes are amazing. On a clear evening you can barely see Morgan's Island (Monkey Island) just off of Coffin Point. Click here to learn more about the monkeys of Morgan's Island.
